Football, beautiful football
by Kevin
Other than watching the amazing Tiger Woods I have been in a bit of a sports watching slump. I just can’t seem to get interested in Basketball this year (witness my lame, if true, I hate the Lakers rant at Sports Central) and Arena Football is still too new for me. So until March Madness and the NFL playoffs I am left dreaming of football season. For those of you in the same boat I offer some links:
- Ally Writer Yack explains why Denver should keep Brian Griese.
- Dan Lewis discusses where Kordell Stewart and Jake Plummer might end up.
- ESPN has a rundown of recent player movement: AFC is here and NFC here. Len Pasquarelli seems to think the Washington Redskins are off to the best start in the free agent market.
The Steelers lost Wayne Gandy to the Saints and have released Kordell but I am still waiting to see what they plan to do in the secondary. I would hope they have a plan to make their defense competitive agains the spread offense. The Steelers offense has the potential to be good next year but if they can’t stop teams from scoring they won’t go very far. Of course many thought they had the perfect off-season last year and the season turned out quite different. All you can do is plan, execute as best you can, hope, and pray. Football is a cruel mistress.
Looks like Mike Shannahan disagrees with me, since he just signed Plummer. Of course, Mike is famous for bringing in top talent and telling them, “There is no job that is safe from compitition.”
So I suppose that Griese may still stick around, though I don’t see how that’s possible since he and Plummer are both earning starter’s pay.
I’m also wondering what this means for Buerlein and pissed that this deal puts Denver in that dreaded “rebuilding mode”, since Plummer won’t pick up the offense adequately this coming season.
