Sports Wrap-Up
by Kevin
A lot of interesting sporting events going on this weekend: NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs, NFL draft, Golf, Baseball, and number of other things I am sure. I caught a little of each and thought I would share my thoughts:
- Have I mentioned I hate the Lakers? I really thought the Timberwolves were poised to take a dominant 3-1 lead in their series today. But NO, the Lakers fought back and won 102-97. The Timberwolves just couldn’t make their shots down the stretch when it was all on the line. Kevin Garnet missed two crucial free throws and Hudson went cold in the fourth quarter. This just might give the Lakers the momentum they need to get back in championship mode. Blast it! Well, even if they win they will have some tough competition in the next rounds. San Antonio, Dallas, and Sacramento are certainly better than Minnesota.
- A feel good win in Houston. Former University of Houston grad Fred Couples picked up his first win in 87 events at the Houston Open. I have always liked Couples for his silky swing and his friendly demeanor and it is good to see him win. He decided to really focus on his game this year and it has paid off. He was in a number of tournaments this year before winning today by birdieing four of the last five holes. The last time Couples won was here in Columbus at the 1998 Memorial. Way to go Freddie!
- Speaking of feeling good, I bet Kevin Millwood feels good about now. The Philadelphia Phillie pitcher pitched the game of his life today, a no hitter shut-out against the San Francisco Giants. Millwood didn’t make to many bad pitches, striking out ten, allowing no hits, no runs, and only three walks. I suppose that is why someone will pay $10 million for you.
- I have been monitoring the NFL draft all weekend. I am working on a full fledged article for Sports Central so I won’t go into detail here but there were some interesting moves and picks. One in particular that I found interesting was the Texans picking former Michigan QB and current New York Yankee prospect Drew Henson. I guess it wasn’t that big of a shock given Henson has been struggling here with the Columbus Clippers (batting under .200) and has a lot of “up side” as they say. If he decides to give up baseball the Texans have a valuable player without too much work. I always thought Henson should have stuck with football and returned to Michigan to win the National Title. But hey, I wasn’t looking at a million dollar contract with the Yankees. For more on the NFL look for my Sports Central article later this week.
