Olympia Fields Strikes Back

by Kevin

All week long people were wondering why Olympia Fields had been chosen for a US Open. The players were eating up the course and going low everyday. On Sunday the course fought back and at the end of the day only five players were under par for the week. The one man left standing tall was Jim Furyk who won the US Open finishing with an impressive eight under 272.

How did the five players I thought would have a good chance of winning going into the weekend fare? Outside of Furyk not to well:
Tiger Woods followed up his Saturday 75 with a 72 and was never in the hunt. As I noted his putting was key – he couldn’t make a putt to save his life.
Vijay Singh absolutely fell apart on Sunday, shooting a 78. He simply couldn’t control his drives.
Mike Weir played well all week but just didn’t have enough to catch Furyk. After a 68 on Saturday he faded on the back nine to a 71 on Sunday. With those above him falling even faster he managed to sneak up to third pace. Not bad after winning the Masters.
My dark horse Stewart Cink stayed in the dark. 72-74 on the weekend left him solidly in the middle of the pack.

So I was right about Furyk, which didn’t require much intelligence, and kinda right about Weir. Really I was partly right about Woods and Singh as well – in that the keys I pointed out held up – I just thought they would play a lot better.

In the end this course just fit Furyk’s game and he took full advantage of the opportunity. He now has a major under his belt to go with his solid career. Paging Phil Mickelson . . .
