Fantasy Football – Week 4

Another week of wild and wacky football action and another week of rather poor fantasy football results for yours truly. Luck might be with me, however, and I could still pull out a couple of wins. Here is how things played out this weekend.

For those who have been following along, you’ll remember that I was struggling because supposed star players weren’t putting up points. Well my desperation came back to haunt me a bit this week.

In my Blogger Bowl 2k3 game I decided I couldn’t count on Rich Gannon anymore so I picked up Jake Delhomme and started him instead of Gannon or Steve McNair. I figure Delhomme would give me consistent points against a weak Atlanta team. He did, a solid game with 12 points, but Gannon had a great game and 30 points and McNair finished with 24! Ouch. Looking for a hot hand at WR I took a chance on Darnerien McCants figuring Washington will put up some points. Nope, McCants gives me the gooseegg. Another problem was my star defense, Tampa Bay, had a bye so I needed a substitue. I went with the
Browns figuring the Bengals always turn the ball over a time or two and it should be a low scoring affair. Wrong. Both teams went pass happy and the Browns gave up 21 to lose. This means no points for the D. The remarkable thing is, I still have a chance to win despite these boneheaded moves, thanks to Marvin Harrison’s 35 points. If Bret Favre score less than 10 points tonight I win. Not likely but possible.

My next team had many of the same problems. I again sat Gannon (20 points in this league) and took a chance on Jeff Blake. Blake had been putting up decent numbers while Gannon struggled. Well, Mr. Blake stunk it up on Sunday costing me over a point (that’s right this league has negative points!). Continuing on this theme I again left Dante Hall on the bench figuring that he wasn’t likely to return a kick back for a TD three weeks in a row and that Baltimore had a tough defense. Wrong! Another TD and almost 14 points. Plaxico Burress couldn’t even break 4. I did pick up Lamar Gordon and he chipped in 9 plus points and Marvin Harrison’s huge game added 25. All of this was meaningless, however, because my opponent was loaded. In an ironic twist, every time Harrison scored so did my opponent as he had Peyton Manning! To add to that he had Randy Moss, Charles Johnson, and Jamal Lewis. So that is a little consolation, because it didn’t really matter what I did those guys were going to tear me up. This guy has 111 points and he forgot that Ricky Williams had a bye and his defense (Green Bay) plays tonight. This was just a game I wasn’t going to win.

Last but not least, is my all Steeler team. Remarkably, I have a good chance at winning this one. No one except Amos Zereoue did particularly well but every body except Jerome Bettis chipped in points and a stout Carolina defense helped. My opponents normally reliable players failed to produce points. Terrell Owens, Clinton Portis, Duce Staley, and Peerless Price totalled 8 points. The Indianapolis defense played great or he wouldn’t be in this one. As it is Donald Driver has to produce 15 points tonight for him to win.

So basically, if Bret Favre and Donald Driver fail to score tonight I could pull out two wins this week. I will be watching with crossed fingers . . .
