What if it is not pandering?

I have certainly covered how I feel about George W. Bush enough lately so I won’t go into that again, but this Instapundit post on Bush and the bioethic council provoked some thoughts. Glenn quotes another blogger who accuses Bush of pandering left and right and then offers this:
A President is bound to alienate some supporters with some things that he does. But it certainly seems as if I’ve been hearing this sort of thing from a lot of people, on a lot of different issues, and often put far more negatively than Phil does. It makes me wonder what, exactly, the plan is.
Perhaps, Bush is simply doing what he thinks is right and is willing to let the chips fall and fight in November on the big issues. I am not sure why every thing Bush does is pandering. Given his efforts on the stem cell issue, perhaps Bush really feels strongly on this issue. Everybody seems perplexed that Bush isn’t acting just like they would in his place and they often try to find some hidden political calculus, but maybe Bush is just different that a lot of bloggers?

Where I expect Bush to be just like me is in the willingness to put other issues aside and focus on what really matters. He’s all over the map with this domestic agenda and there’s no good reason for it. He needs to recognize that he’s got a lot of single-issue supporters out there who will only put up with so much in keeping true to the single issue.
