What is a blog good for?
by Kevin
Absolutely nothing, say it again!
I joke, I joke! The reason for the lame humor and play on classic rock anthems, is a desire to think about the blog as a form for intelligent thought (ironic no?). I don’t have time right now to get into the weeds, but I want you to be prepared when I do. So here is some homework:
- Please read Dan’s discussion of blogging and lit-blogs in particular which was in response to Adam Kotsko.
- Also read Alan Jacobs.
- To give you a taste of where I am coming from I offer this quote from a discussion of a different, but similar, debate:
Listen folks, blogging is a process. It is a way to use certain types of software to communicate. Over generalizations of the type Mr. Hoover – and countless others – engages in is lazy and unhelpful. In this particular case it is absolutely counter-factual. The vast majority of literary bloggers I come across are well read, intelligent, and passionate about books and ideas. I may not always agree with them, but they are anything but sources of “rumor, mistakes, innuendo, obscenity, gossip and speculation.” For the most part they are full of news and notes about books, authors, ideas, and issues.
- Given my newfound commitment to be more of a thinker than a linker, I hope to be able to organize my thoughts and present them in the near future.
