  1. Very interesting post, Kevin. I’ve read good reviews of this book on other posts too.
I hadn’t read a children’s book for years. In 1997, my daughter Cathy was 7 and was given the first Harry Potter book for her birthday by her aunt. On holiday that year, Malcolm began reading it to her. Jenny, our youngest, was 2, but was fascinated. Then Eleanor, Malcolm’s eldest and my stepdaughter, aged 14, began to listen. Then I started. By the end of the holiday we were all completely hooked — I’m now a card carrying HP addict.

Since then we have all discovered His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, utterly compelling.

Yep, I have stopped being dismissive of YA (or teen) books, or children’s books, or whatever you call them. I’ve also noticed that Cathy, who is now 15, flips between “adult”, “young adult” and children’s books seamlessly.

There are many of us adults who enjoy children’s and YA books. You might be interested in Jen Robinson’s blog, at http://jkrbooks.typepad.com, and her Web site, at http://www.growingbookworms.com. Her purpose is to promote “the love of books by children, and the continued reading of children’s books by adults.” Follow her links and you’ll find there’s quite a thriving “kidlitosphere.”
